On May 25, a meeting was held at the Confederation of Trade Unions of Armenia with Özge Berber, the International Labour Organization (ILO) expert on gender equality and anti-discrimination, and Nune Hovhannisyan, the ILO National Coordinator.
During the meeting, a number of important issues related to the protection of the labour rights of domestic workers were discussed, with particular attention given to existing challenges in the sector, social protection mechanisms, and the need to ensure decent work.
Special attention was given to the International Labour Organization’s Convention No. 189 on Decent Work for Domestic Workers. The discussion focused on the relevance of the Convention for Armenia and its potential impact on the protection of labour rights, the improvement of working conditions, and the prevention of discrimination.
During the meeting, expert Ani Hovhannisyan also presented the report “Lessons Learned from the Experience of Organizing Informal and Domestic Workers’ Trade Unions in Armenia.”
The report addressed the experience of organizing informal and domestic workers, the challenges encountered, mechanisms for worker engagement, and the important role of trade unions in protecting their rights.
Special attention was also paid to the activities of the newly established trade union organization “Inqd” and its significance in representing and protecting the interests of domestic workers.
The parties reaffirmed the importance of continued cooperation aimed at promoting equal opportunities in the world of work, combating discrimination, and strengthening the principles of decent work in Armenia.
